Location. The Sebel Reef House & Spa in Palm Cove is located on the beach in northeastern Australia in Queensland. The remarkable natural environment presents myriad recreational options: guests can sail to the Great Barrier Reef from the Palm Cove jetty or explore the Daintree and Cape Tribulation rainforests and Atherton Tablelands. Cairns International Airport is a half hour's drive away.
Hotel Features. The Sebel Reef House & Spa was built in 1958 by a Cairns bookmaker. Its white washed walls, terracotta tiles and indigenous wood construction are surrounded by a freshwater moat. Inside, white wicker interiors contrast with colored elements. Three pools are surrounded by greenery, which include one saltwater pool and two spa tubs. The hotel's spa offers a full range of treatments from Europe and the Far East. A standout feature of the hotel is the Reef House Restaurant, which is headed by Executive Chef Philip Mitchell. Mitchell sources produce from local waters, the Atherton Tablelands and local markets. His menu is eclectic, synthesizing Mediterranean, Asian and Continental influences to create Nuevo cuisine that defies classification. Examples include Vietnamese BBQ pork with mint, coriander and chili salad to start and then sea scallop risotto with shaved fennel, leeks, grana padano or scorched teriyaki ocean trout fillet, fried wasabi cake, bok choy, lime and soy beurre blanc.
Guestrooms. The hotel's 69 air conditioned guestrooms feature large beds that are draped with netting, which are turned down nightly. Each have private verandahs. For entertainment, large color televisions feature DVD players.
Expert Tip. The hotel's Lagoon Bar is run on an honor system where guests help themselves to drinks and then tally the number of drinks when ready to leave. Please note. The hotel is currently undergoing renovations to its restaurant, bar and lobby. The hotel assures that there will be minimal disturbance during the refurbishment.
